Have just spent a wonderful weekend at the Harrogate History Festival and bought a weekend rover ticket which allowed me to indulge in a fascinating range of panel discussions, conversations and lectures across the span of history from the ancient Greeks to the scents of the 1980s. I was able to connect with some extremely well known experts in their fields and some world reknowned authors as well as discovering new authors. The festival team and their volunteers could not have been more helpful from the warm welcome on arrival and throughout the programme. As I was using crutches and had difficulty in carrying things both the festival staff and hotel staff could not have been more helpful or caring making my time at the Festival more comfortable whenever possible. As I had a blue badge I was fortunate to be able to get into the festival room as soon as it opened but I was also, unfortunately, able to hear the odd rude comments made to festival staff and volunteers. With festival goers having different types of tickets and the room needing to be cleared up and reset up between speakers, people have to queue and have their tickets checked. What a shame people feel the need to take their 'frustration' out on people who are there to help! Certainly when I went to the Crime Writer's Festival this summer, crutch-less, I had no issues with queues. It was, by the way, another 5 star Festival. Thanks to the team, I look forward to returning to both next year

Another fabulous festival. Loved the Crime Writing Festival last year and loved it again this year. Bought day rover tickets for Friday and today (Saturday) and experienced a huge array of interesting panel discussions, guest author interviews and a plethora of literary equivalents of amuse bouches. The crime scene experience put on by The thin blue spine was an unexpected delight and along with all the pop up activities hosted by the Dead Good Reader Awards and today's Crime Files there was never a dull moment. The 'in conversation' with Susan Calman and Val McDermid was an absolute joy and my personal highlight of the festival.
As always the staff of Harrogate International Festivals ably supported by the amazing and enthusiastic volunteers did a fantastic job even providing fans with fans in an unexpectedly hot and muggy Yorkshire. Great work guys. Thanks and see you next year.

This was our first visit to the Harrogate History Festival. We attended four separate events and enjoyed all four. We had a very entertaining hour listening to Kate Mosse talking about her various books and how she is to start writing another trilogy in the new year (can't wait to read these). We also attended the "My Era Is Better Than Yours", where four authors put their viewpoints across about the eras they write about - it was very interesting and enjoyable and it was a pleasure to meet Janina Ramirez afterwards who won the debate with her passionate viewpoint on the Vikings (quite nice chaps really) with the ancient Greeks coming a close second. Perfume: A Century of Scents was lighthearted and smelly (in the nicest possible way) with many contributions and reminiscences from the audience about their favorite perfumes. We also heard Princess Michael of Kent talking about her third book in her Anjou trilogy set in France. Some more books to go on the list to read! All-in-all an enjoyable experience and one which we hope to repeat in the future.

Attended an event hosted by this company today, the History Festival. Whilst an excellent venue with excellent content, the diabolical staff employed made this a miserable experience. I paid £150 x 2 for 'rover' tickets and after visiting the first author session today I made what transpired to be a dreadful mistake. I waited in the hall, like many others, for the next event, away from the seating area. Two minutes before the start of the next session an events supervisor asked me and my partner to leave the hall and join the back of a 100m queue. Inadvertently, and due to no prior warning, we didn't realise that standing a few feet away from the door meant we had 'breached' their small minded protocol. I explained that we hadn't realised and any normal person would have smiled and allowed us to our seat. Not this person. Needless to say our money was wasted and we didn't bother attending this season or many others. Badly organised, poor communication and supervisors who really don't care whether you're there or not. Never again. The rover ticket was an utter waste of money, thanks to the behaviour of the staff at the event.

Edit: the event organisers didn't ever bother to try and resolve my complaint which is very shabby in this day and age. However, the queuing issues aside I did enjoy listening to the authors and with this in mind I have upgraded my review from one to three stars. If I had received even a slight bit of 'good service' from organisers this review would now be a five star one.

Brought my family and friends to the festival and it wasn't a regret they loved it! One thing to improve though, is more activities for children.
